For fertilization to occur, sperm are deposited in the female vagina, then enter the uterus through the opening known as the cervix, and travel to the oviduct, the site of zygote formation.

Of the several hundred million sperm present in a typical ejaculate, only a few hundred reach the upper third of the oviduct where fertilization normally occurs. At best, a single sperm can enter the ovum as it descends from the ovary.
