MacMolecule & PCMolecule Activities
The web activities in this section of The Biology Project are used in conjunction with the commercial software MacMolecule/PCMolecule and require a special setup for web browsers.
1. Obtain the Software
On The University of Arizona campus
Everywhere else
Visit the Molecular Ventures home page at http://www.molvent.com. At this commercial site, visitors can download a lite version of MacMolecule/PCMolecule, a demo of the full featured program, or purchase (and download) full versions.

2. Configure Your Web Browser
Once you have downloaded a copy of MacMolecule or PCMolecule, you then configure your web browser to work with this molecular graphics program. The web browser helper application information is as follows:

Mime type: chemical/x-macmolecule
Suffix: mcm
File type: Text
Details for setting helper applications in Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer 3.0 are shown below.
Netscape Navigator
- From the Option menu choose General Preferences...
- Click the Helpers tab at the top of the window.
- Click the New... Button toward the right of the window.
- Enter the helper application into the fields, as shown below. When you get to the Handled by... section, click the Browse button to lead Netscape to Mac/PCMolecule.
- Click the Apply button, and then the OK button.
- Test it out by clicking this link to view the amino acid serine in Mac/PCMolecule.
Microsoft Internet Explorer
- From the Edit menu, choose Options...
- Click the Helpers button on the left side of the window.
- Click the Add... Button toward the right of the window.
- Enter the helper application into the fields, as shown below. When you get to the Handled by... section, click the Choose button to lead Internet Explorer to Mac/PCMolecule.
- Click the New button, and then the OK button on the next window.
- Test it out by clicking this link to view the amino acid serine in Mac/PCMolecule.
