The University of Arizona Official Trademark
Using The University of Arizona Trademarks
The Arizona Board of Regents on behalf of The University of Arizona has federally registered
the logos and names of the University. The department charged with the responsibility of
coordination the licensing program is the Office of Trademarks and Licensing (OT&L). The
department that oversees the use of the marks used in printed materials is Printing & Publishing
Support Services/Graphics (PPSS).
The logo bearing the registered mark has been recorded with the United States Patent and
Trademarks Office. Granting of such registration proves the sole ownership of the mark lies with
the University, and should there be any claims to the contrary, the burden of proof is on the
claimant. It further requires the University to establish procedures to protect the registered marks,
(the registered mark is considered part of this protection), and make sure the registered mark is
used consistently as part of the logo. Once a logo is recorded, the registered mark is as much a
part of the logo as any of the initial elements (i.e., the eye in the graphic cat logo, or the "z" in
"Arizona") Failure to follow these requirements may result in loss of ownership of the mark.
Loss of ownership would allow anyone to use the mark in any manner they wish.
The Official name of the University, as well as the registered trademark is: The University of
Arizona.
When using the wordmark, or referring to the University, "The" must always be capitalized as
part of the name. The registered mark always follows "Arizona". The only exceptions to this rule
are when the name of the University is used in a sentence or an address.
