UpToDate Newsletter
Message from the President and Editor-in-Chief
Denise S. Basow, MD Dear Colleague,

UpToDate is celebrating 20 years of improving patient care and outcomes. It is fitting, then, that we recently launched our 20th specialty - Psychiatry. Please take a moment to watch UpToDate founder Dr. Burton "Bud" Rose tell the story of how he was inspired to start UpToDate (link to video).

At UpToDate we feel a tremendous responsibility to get things right and empower clinicians to make the "right" medical decisions at the point of care. A recent study, published in the U.K., confirmed that we are, indeed, meeting this responsibility. From reduced treatment delays to avoidance of unnecessary testing, this study's findings are consistent with over 30 studies confirming the value of UpToDate in improving care and hospital performance.

Another milestone we are celebrating is our official launch on a variety of social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube. Our mission is to improve patient care, everywhere, so join the conversation and let us know how you use UpToDate.

As always, we appreciate your ongoing support and input, which helps us to continually improve our content and product integration offerings.

Sincerely,

Denise S. Basow, MD
Editor-in-Chief

Use of UpToDate Improves Patient Care and Hospital Performance, UK Hospital Study Says

UpToDate was recently the subject of a study in the United Kingdom published online in Health Information and Libraries Journal. The survey, led by John Addison, Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, was carried out across a dozen hospital Trusts in the north west of England, and analyzed the use of UpToDate in clinical practice.

Co-author Addison, explains: "Nationwide we are in a position where we have to make evidence-based choices about where to spend tight budgets. In these stringent times, I felt it was important to test our purchasing decision by looking at real world scenarios to assess UpToDate's true value."

More than 90% of the 239 respondents who had used UpToDate identified at least one benefit. Visit this link for more details on the study and specific findings.
Setting the Standard for Care: HL7 Infobutton Integration
UpToDate recently partnered with HIMSS to host a webinar on HL7 Infobutton Integration. Dr. Stephen Beck, CMIO of Catholic Health Partners (CHP) of Cincinnati, Ohio, discussed his EHR implementation saying, "Integrating UpToDate within the EHR allows CHP to deliver safer, more effective care and allows CHP to 'make smart providers, smarter.' There are always opportunities to expand our knowledge as providers, and this gives us the opportunity to do so at the point of care." If you missed the webinar, visit this link.

  Institute of Medicine Roundtable
EMR
Dr. Peter Bonis, Chief Medical Officer of UpToDate, spoke at the Institute of Medicine's program on "Continuous Learning and the Digital Infrastructure for Informed Clinical Decisions." Dr. Bonis sat on a panel that addressed current resources available to meet the needs of clinicians and the opportunities for improving development and spread of the digital infrastructure.   Practice Changing UpDates Identify Vital Clinical Developments
Practice Changing UpDates help clinicians quickly and easily locate new information that leads to a change in UpToDate recommendations and directly affects decisions about patient care - either in the office setting or hospital. One recent example is a Practice Changing UpDate around use of intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABPs). Results of the randomized IABP-SHOCK trial led to a change in our recommendations around the routine use of IABPs for patients with myocardial infarction in cardiogenic shock. You can browse the most important updates listed by specialty in the What's New section of our website, or view a chronological list of the most recent Practice Changing UpDate additions.

Our "Family Medicine" Specialty is Now "Family Medicine and General Practice"
In different countries, the specialty of physicians who provide individual and family healthcare is referred to by various names including "Family Medicine" and "General Practice". To enable physicians worldwide to identify with a specialty and quickly find relevant content, we renamed Family Medicine to Family Medicine and General Practice.
