The Dorm
Coronado Residence Hall

Participants in the Web Design Workshop will be staying at Coronado Residence Hall on the UA campus.

Coronado has a spacious entry lobby and comfortable sitting areas that open onto patio areas. The decor extends into the casual multipurpose area, which contains a small kitchen, vending area, and seating/TV area adjacent to a large laundry room. Also on the main floor is a game room with pool and ping pong tables.

Standard rooms are arranged "suite-style." Suites are comprised of two independent double rooms which share a small connecting bathroom equipped with a shower, toilet and sink/vanity (suite floor plan). Adjoining suites are single sex, and all participants will be located on the same floor. Participants will have their own room, but will share the bathroom with a suitemate of the same sex.

Your stay at Coronado includes all the basics like sheets, pillows, towels and washcloths, and telephone. There's even an Internet hook-up if you want to plug in your portable. (See details on Internet hook-ups below.)

Check-in and Check-out times
Check-in time is between 2 pm and midnight on Sunday the 6th. If you are arriving outside of these times, we can make special arrangements for you. The workshop begins at 8:30 Monday morning (the 7th) and ends at 3:00 Saturday the 12th. Check-out time at Coronado is by noon on Sunday the 13th.
Internet Access from the Dorm
The residence hall is wired for ethernet, if you'd like to bring your laptop computer. To get your machine set up with the network, email Denice the ethernet address. (This is a unique 12-digit hexadecimal (1-F) number that looks something like 0260.8C3B.7A21. Because it is unique, it is what identifies your computer on the network.) Here is a web page that explains how to find that info on your computer: http://w3.arizona.edu/~rescomp/rescomp/connect.htm

(The Biology Learning Center is equipped with enough desktop machines for everyone, as well as the necessary software, so there's no need to bring a laptop for the workshop itself.)

Food
Coronado residence hall is a short walking distance from the Chemistry & Biology Sciences Teaching Building where the workshop will take place. There are many places to eat nearby, including:
  • bagels
  • pizza
  • Middle Eastern
  • Chinese
  • Greek
  • Lebanese
  • burgers, fries and microbrewery
  • coffee shops (Starbucks, Coffee Plantation, & several local shops)
  • sandwiches and salads
  • Mexican
  • and the campus Student Union
Coffee will be ready every morning at 8:00 in the room adjacent to the Biology Learning Center. Midmorning and midafternoon cold drinks and munchies will also be provided.
Transportation

Workshop participants will not need cars--workshop staff will meet participants at the airport and everything they'll need during their stay is within walking distance. If you do plan to bring or rent a car, please contact workshop instructor Madeleine Lapointe at lapointe@u.arizona.edu or 520-626-4909 so she can arrange for parking.

Plane fares into Phoenix are sometimes lower than Tucson. There is a shuttle that runs between Phoenix and Tucson. The driving time is 2 hours and it drops off and picks up right by the University campus in Tucson. Arizona Shuttle's phone number is 520-795-6771, and the cost is $40, round trip.

Campus Recreation Center

Guest Passes to the Campus Recreation Center are available for workshop participants. (The pool is especially inviting during June--bring your swimsuit if you're interested.) If you would like to buy a guest pass, please email Madeleine lapointe@u.arizona.edu so we can begin arranging this for you. The guest pass will cost $20.00.

The Weather

Tucson in June is a little hot, with highs hovering around 100 deg F. The good news is that humidity is very low, and all of the workshop activities will take place in air-conditioned rooms. We recommend that you:

  • Bring sunscreen and a hat.
  • Carry water with you.
  • Dress comfortably.

Sometimes the rooms are too air conditioned--so you may want to bring a jacket or sweater to wear inside the Biology Learning Center.
Trip to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum

On Saturday night (the 12th) we will have an optional trip to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum. This place is amazing--and the weather should be ideal for a night-time visit.
