The Biology Project

Project Team

Founding Faculty

Bill Grimes, Professor of Biochemistry
grimes@biosci.arizona.edu
http://www.biology.arizona.edu/wjg/
Bill came to the University of Arizona in 1971. In 1985 he became Head of the Undergraduate Program in Biochemistry, and was asked to create a new Introductory Course in Biology. Working first with Dr. Marty Hewlett and joined the second year by Dr. Rick Hallick, he has continued the development of Biology 181 as an introductory course for majors and non-majors. He enjoys the intellectual stimulation of his cancer research, but regards teaching and advising as his most important activities.
Rick Hallick, Professor of Biochemistry
hallick@arizona.edu
http://www.blc.arizona.edu/rick/
Rick has been teaching undergraduate biology and biochemistry since 1973. He has a strong interest in using technology to enhance undergraduate education, and is the author of many of the courseware modules for this project. Rick is co-founder and faculty supervisor of the Biology Learning Center, and also is active in designing MacMolecule2, molecular graphics software for undergraduate education.

Coordinator

Mike Wells, Professor of Biochemistry
mawells@email.arizona.edu
http://aedes.biosci.arizona.edu
Mike came to the University of Arizona in 1967 as part of the founding faculty of the College of Medicine. He taught Biochemistry in the College of Medicine until 1986, when he became Department Head, a position he held until 1995. During that period he began teaching Undergraduate Biochemistry and currently teaches the first semester of the major's course, Biochemistry 462a. He has developed an extensive web site for this course and has also published a CD ROM-based review of Biochemistry, An Electronic Companion to Biochemistry, M. A. Wells and J. L. Tupy, Cogito Learning Media, Inc., New York and San Francisco (1998). These activities have generated considerable interest in using the Internet in education. He also founded the Manduca Project , a K-5 educational program. He maintains a strong interest in research in insect biochemistry and currently directs a research group of more than 20, funded by grants from NIH and Exelixis, Inc.

Development Staff

Madeleine Lapointe, Senior Instructional Specialist
lapointe@u.arizona.edu
http://www.biology.arizona.edu/ml/
Madeleine's primary concern is with the instructional design of The Biology Project. Drawing from the cognitive learning theories she transforms academic content provided by content experts into courseware modules. She has a B.A. in Media Arts and an M.A. in Educational Psychology (focus on cognitive learning theories, perception and memory) and has had a long time interest in the use of technology in education.
Jennifer Katcher, Senior Media Specialist
jkatcher@u.arizona.edu
Jennifer develops online biology learning materials and is involved with the instructional design of The Biology Project. She has taught introductory biology courses at the community college level, integrating computer technology to enhance active learning. She has a Bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular biology, and a Master's degree in plant and soil biology.
Portrait of Cheryl Cheryl Ryan, Senior Graphic Designer
cherylr@u.arizona.edu
Cheryl, Senior Graphic Designer, produces accurate and stimulating graphics and layouts, that provide online viewers with information that is quick to learn and easy to retain. The needs of the audience are her primary motivation in the creation of effective designs. Her background includes marketing, illustration, and digital pre-press.
Ken Williams, Principal Systems Analyst / Technologist
kenw@u.arizona.edu
http://www.blc.arizona.edu/ken/
Ken provides and maintains the technological underpinnings of the web services offered by The Biology Project. His duties include network design, server design and maintenance, systems and database programming, and ongoing evaluation and implementation of multimedia delivery technologies.
Michael Wagenheim, Support System Analyst/ Web Technologist
wagenhei@email.arizona.edu
Michael develops interactive multi-media simulations as learning tools to visually enhance student understanding of conceptually difficult materials. He is also working to make the Biology Project a database driven site that is both scalable and amenable to being translated into other languages. Michael has a background in bringing educational materials to the web.
Robert Hershoff, Senior Application System Analyist
hershoff@u.arizona.edu
Robert, the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Department computer resource person, is proficient at the use of screwdrivers and corkscrews to alleviate computer-related distress. His job duties include technical support for the Biology Project.
Bjorn Meyer, Biochemistry Computing Student Assistant
blmeyer@u.arizona.edu
Bjorn assists in maintaining the Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics Department's computer infrastructure.
