Workshop Summary
The emphasis of this 6-day intensive web design workshop will be on creating high-quality, student-friendly instructional materials in biology on the WWW.

The Biology Project Web Design Workshop is project-based. Participants will come with biology content, and will learn how to craft that content into an interactive learning experience for students.

During the workshop, we will cover such topics as:

  • critical analysis of web sites
  • instructional design for the web
  • site and page design, usability issues
  • creating web graphics (Adobe Photoshop)
  • options for online course materials
  • colors on the web
  • Internet and copyright issues
  • search engine strategies
  • basic and advanced HTML
  • technical infrastructure
  • database integration.

Participants
This workshop is open to biology teaching faculty and instructional support staff at colleges and universities. Because the workshop is project-based, we encourage participants to come in pairs (ie, two professors, or a professor and a web designer).

The workshop is designed to accommodate many levels of expertise. Basic computer skills are required.

Cost and Financial Support Opportunity
All participants will be eligible to receive a Biology Project Web Design Fellowship Award, made possible by an NSF Recognition Award for the Integration of Research and Education.
  • The Biology Project Web Design Fellowship Award covers participant housing, snacks, and workshop materials (workshop notebook, HTML reference book, and a workshop CD).
  • Participants will pay for travel to and from Tucson, and for meals.

The Application Process
The application process for The Biology Project Web Design Fellowship Award (and thus the workshop) is competitive. Twenty Fellowships will be awarded (workshop is now full!). We will select applications that demonstrate:
  1. solid biology content and good ideas for putting that content on the web, and
  2. institutional support for the proposed web project.
Projects that integrate research and education are especially encouraged. Special consideration will be given to applicants who propose to contribute materials to The Biology Project web site.

Online Application for 1999 Fellowship & Workshop

20 of the 20 spots are now filled.
*We might be able to squeeze in a couple more participants. Email inquiries to Denice Warren.
