Nearshore Marine Processesand
Environmental Concerns
General Disclaimer
This Web project was developed as part of "Internet Resources" courses offered by the Biology and Geology departments of the California State University, Los Angeles in 1995 and 1996. It was submitted to the instructors for evaluation and then placed on-line by the Electronic Desktop Project (EDP). Introduction
Marine processes-waves, tides and currents have a profound effect on coastline directly and indirectly. These processes are responsible for erosion, transportation of eroded debris and deposition.Environmental Marine Geology studies geologic processes and sediment characteristics along the coast, in the nearshore, and on the continental margin to determine environmental processes and impacts of development.

Environmental Quality and Preservation
Pollution, waste disposal, fragile environments, marine reserves programs are to be studied
Upcoming Events
In Santa Cruz, California there will be a two-week short course, for more information click here..
Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary
Cliff retreat and storm-wave attack have caused problems in many areas around Monterey Bay and more knowledge of these natural processes in a regional context is important to homeowners, municipalities, and policy-makers as mitigation strategies are considered. See a framework of these processes.
National Marine Sanctuary
Many Sites in US including California's Channel Islands, Cordell Bank etc. Click here for a complete list and information.
Hurricane Impacts on the Coastal Environments
In order to help mitigate the impacts caused by hurricanes such as Andrew and Iniki, environmental managers and engineers try to understand the geological processes that cause erosion and environmental change. USGS scientists plans and strategies are to be considered.
National Estuarine Research Reserves
Examine the designated sites and the proposed sites and link to "Estuary Net".
Coastal Images
Daily coastal images are provided by "coastal images lab" in Oregon. These are updated every day.
Nearshore Sedimentary Structures Movie
As on California coastline, the sea attacks the shore somewhat like a horizontal saw, confining its direct impact to a rather narrow zone in a vertical sense. Wave-generated nearshore currents move sediment in an onshore or offshore direction, depending on the specific conditions at any time. Nearshore currents sedimentation movie illustrates an animation of cyclic deposition. Warning: it takes a while to download, see the next screen and use unix version to download it.
Environmental Law
There is an internationally involved so called E-Law .
Marine Geohydrology
Groundwater seawater interactions studies.
Humor
Find out about what a geophysicist does. Get recent chemistry news. None has to be taken seriously.
